Levitra vs. Viagra – which one is the better choice?

Viagra is definitely one of the most famous and well-known medications in the history. The only medications that come to mind that can claim to be anywhere near as famous as Viagra are aspirin and heroin. You are probably wondering what in the world we are talking about mentioning heroin here, but the fact is that heroin was once used as a medication just like any other, used for cough and for alleviating pain. It may be technically inaccurate to mention it here as it is much more famous, or notorious for being a drug of abuse, but it still used to be a medication.

Viagra was a huge revolution in the way people see erectile dysfunction. It has definitely contributed to a change in opinion on this condition as it made a mainstream condition out of it. All of a sudden, erectile dysfunction stopped being this embarrassing and emasculating condition and became your run of the mill, ordinary condition for which there is a treatment and which is nothing to be ashamed of. The reason it managed to do this is that it finally gave men something to rely on without any doubt whether it will work. It is also a revolutionary medication in that it gave the idea to other companies to come up with their medications that will follow the same principle and that will provide people with choice when it comes to ED medications.

The next medication that came out, five years later is Levitra, which has since been a competitor to Viagra. The same principle was used when developing this medication and it has to be noted that it is unlikely that it would have been developed so quickly if not for Viagra. This is something everyone has to give credit to Viagra for and even the loudest advocates of Levitra, or Cialis, cannot deny this.

On the basic level, these Levitra and Viagra are more similar than your ordinary medications from the same class. They share a mechanism of action that is near identical. Both Viagra and Levitra inhibit PDE5 and as a result of this enable healthy erections. In addition to this, or more precisely as a result of this, the contraindications for both these medications are the same and the interactions with other medications are also the same. Furthermore, if someone is allergic to Viagra, he is most likely also allergic to Levitra. This shows exactly how similar these medications are.

However, they are also quite different chemically and pharmacologically. To introduce the chemical structure of individual drugs here would be pretty much pointless as you would really need to be proficient in chemistry in order to understand it. Instead, we are going to tell you what these differences resulted in and what are the differences that you will observe between these two medications as the end user.

First of all, you will notice, perhaps, that Levitra is more selective than Viagra. What this means is that it is more successful at targeting only the PDE found in the penis, affecting less the levels of other PDEs in other parts of the body. As a result of this, side effects are somewhat less common with Levitra than with Viagra. The most important difference, however, is the fact that Levitra will last longer than Viagra. Viagra loses effects in four hours, while Levitra lasts for five. Effectively, with Levitra you gain an extra hour of effects, meaning one extra hour of sex, which can be plenty at times.

Ultimately, Levitra is just as effective as Viagra, only less likely to cause side effects and with duration that is superior to that of Viagra. Obviously, it is a better choice.
